INT JEDI TEMPLE - OBI WAN'S QUARTERS - MORNING
Obi Wan meditates in the early morning. A shaft of sunlight streams through a small window.
Anakin enters. He plops down on the bed.
OBI WAN KENOBI
Where did you go?
ANAKIN
Out.
OBI WAN KENOBI
What happened?
ANAKIN
Nothing happened. That's the problem. I tell her I love her, and she runs off. Now she's gone.
OBI WAN KENOBI
Your countenance has changed. You look darker.
ANAKIN
So when are we leaving?
OBI WAN KENOBI
We're not.
ANAKIN
I saw a whole army of Jedi Knights loading up into battleships. We're going.
Anakin sits up straighter, ready to rise.
OBI WAN KENOBI
No. We are not.
Anakin stands up, towering over the sitting Obi Wan.
ANAKIN
They need us!
Obi Wan rises to his full height, but still is shorter than Anakin.
OBI WAN KENOBI
Anakin, I said we are staying here. I am your master and you will obey.
Rage builds inside Anakin.
ANAKIN
You are not my master. Qui Gon freed me. I'm not a slave anymore.
OBI WAN KENOBI
No, you are not a slave. You are my padawan.
ANAKIN
Then teach me something! By the stars, Obi Wan, the last thing you taught me was three years ago. I've had to teach myself how to use the force.
OBI WAN KENOBI
Yoda can teach you better than I.
ANAKIN
So now you're trying to push me off to someone else? Forget it! I'll go take the Jedi trials on my own.
Anakin storms out.
OBI WAN KENOBI
Anakin!
The room brightens slightly.
QUI GON JINN (O.S.)
He is master of his own destiny, Obi Wan.
Obi Wan whirls around, to see his old master, QUI GON JINN, glowing before him.
OBI WAN KENOBI
Master Qui Gon.
CUT TO:
INT JEDI TEMPLE - COUNCIL CHAMBERS - NOON
Anakin throws open the doors and strides into the chamber. He stands defiantly in the center of the council.
The council ceases their discussion and turns attention to Anakin.
YODA
Anakin Skywalker, why have you disturbed us?
ANAKIN
I am ready to take the Jedi Trials.
KI-ADI MUNDI
Ready? What do you know of being ready?
ANAKIN
Give me the trials.
Anakin ignites his lightsaber and holds it menacingly in front of him.
CUT TO:
EXT CONCORD DAWN - FOREST - DAY
A unit of Jedi Knights, led by Mace Windu, fans out, searching for the entrance to a hidden base. Adi Gallia brings up the rear.
All forest sounds suddenly cease. Mace gestures everybody to the ground.
Blaster fire rips apart the trees right at head level.
MACE WINDU
Get ready!
Dozens of MANDALORIAN SUPERCOMMANDOS rush at the Jedi. Lightsabers ignite. Blasters fire. Chaos and carnage ensue as the Mandalorians attempt to overwhelm the Jedi by sheer force of numbers.
Mace Windu and Adi Gallia fight back to back. They cut down many Mandalorians. But more keep coming. There is no end to this enemy.
ADI GALLIA
We can't hold them back much longer!
MACE WINDU
We must.
A jedi screams as he is shot from behind. Two more jedi fall.
ADI GALLIA
There's too many of them!
MACE WINDU
Fall back! Fall back!
The jedi attempt to regroup, but the Mandalorians ruthlessly cut through them. One jedi attempts to surrender, she is quickly cut down.
ADI GALLIA
Jessa!
Adi Gallia tries to rush to her fallen student. Mace Windu stops her.
MACE WINDU
She's one with the force now. You can't bring her back.
A huge Mandalorian Walker crashes through the trees. It fires strafing bolts at the fleeing Jedi. Some Mandalorians get caught in the hail of blasts. They fall silently.
Mace Windu and Adi Gallia race back toward their starship. Sentries around the ship see them coming and prepare the ship for take off.
INT JEDI WARSHIP - CONTINUING
The ship takes off. Mace Windu looks around. Only three Jedi Knights left, in addition to he and Adi Gallia. The sentries were Padawan learners. Only four of them left.
MACE WINDU
There were too many of them.
ADI GALLIA
The council must hear of this.
MACE WINDU
Open a channel to Coruscant.
CUT TO:
INT JEDI TEMPLE - COUNCIL CHAMBERS - DAY
A hologram of Mace Windu stands in the center floor.
MACE WINDU
We were overwhelmed by the Mandalorians. We alone remain to warn the galaxy. They are clones. They cannot be controlled with the force.
YODA
Return to Coruscant, Master Windu.
KI-ADI MUNDI
We will formulate our attack when you arrive.
Anakin watches the hologram in utter disbelief.
ANAKIN
They're dead? All of them.
KI-ADI MUNDI
The Jedi are not invincible, young Anakin.
OPPO RANCISIS, a hairy Jedi Master, speaks for the first time.
OPPO RANCISIS
We must destroy the cloning facilities. Only then will their numbers be limited.
KI-ADI MUNDI
Only Obi Wan knows exactly where that facility is. And that is only one of perhaps hundreds of facilities.
YODA
Anakin Skywalker, declare yourself ready for the Jedi Trials?
Anakin straightens to his full height.
ANAKIN
I am ready.
CUT TO:
INT JEDI TEMPLE - TRAINING ARENA - AFTERNOON
YARAEL POOF, a long-necked Quermian Jedi Master, watches Anakin closely. Anakin lies stretched out on a rack, sweating profusely. He writhes in terror, staring at something only he can see.
Yarael Poof frowns in concentration. Anakin arches his back, trying to overcome his deepest fears.
Obi Wan kneels, as he watches from a distance away. Yoda stands next to him.
OBI WAN KENOBI
He's killing him.
YODA
Always different the trials are. The boy must face his fears.
Anakin shakes his head, trying to get rid of the horrible visions.
ANAKIN
Mom... no. Leave her alone! Amidala. Amidala! Leave her alone!
Suddenly Anakin is still. He looks at the straps binding his wrists. The straps fall open. He looks calmly at Yarael Poof.
ANAKIN
You will be the first.
Anakin gets up and walks away. Obi Wan rushes to his side.
OBI WAN KENOBI
What did you see?
ANAKIN
I'm going to find Amidala.
OBI WAN KENOBI
Anakin, what did you see?
Obi Wan grabs Anakin's elbow. Anakin shakes off his hand and turns unblinkingly to look at Obi Wan.
ANAKIN
I saw you.
Anakin walks away.
CUT TO:
EXT NABOO - OUTSIDE THEED - NIGHT
Darth Rezin watches a Jedi ship fly to the capital city.
EXT NABOO - THEED - NIGHT
Anakin looks cautiously across the open courtyard. Nothing stirs. He starts across the open space. Halfway through, he stops and points his finger to a raised corridor.
In the open corridor, BOBA FETT ducks behind a column.
CUT TO:
INT NABOO - PALACE - THRONE ROOM - NIGHT
Queen Amidala sits in conference with her advisers and Gungan representatives. SIO BIBBLE, the governor, and CAPTAIN PANAKA sit among the group. JAR JAR BINKS represents the Gungans.
CAPTAIN PANAKA
Long range sensors show advance ships heading toward Naboo, your majesty. I suggest we evacuate immmediately.
JAR JAR BINKS
Meesa no tinken da Gungans ganna leave. Wesa fightin 'gin.
AMIDALA
Jar Jar Binks. Go to the Gungans and tell them of this new threat.
SIO BIBBLE
I do not think we can win.
CAPTAIN PANAKA
If the Gungans fight, they will die.
Alarms go off. Captain Panaka turns and draws his blaster.
The doors burst open. Anakin rushes through. Captain Panaka shoots at Anakin.
AMIDALA
No!
Anakin draws his lightsaber and deflects the blow.
ANAKIN
Amidala, you've got to come with me.
AMIDALA
Captain Panaka, what are those alarms?
CAPTAIN PANAKA
Proximity alarms. Something or someone is inside the palace.
INT NABOO - PALACE - QUEEN'S CHAMBERS - NIGHT
The handmaidens talk in the other room. Amidala sits in a chair, waiting for the "all clear" signal. Anakin looks out the window to the open balcony.
AMIDALA
Why did you come here?
ANAKIN
I saw that you were in danger.
AMIDALA
How? You were on Coruscant.
ANAKIN
Through the force. I can see things... the future.
Amidala debates her next question. She really doesn't want to know, but curiosity drives her to ask.
AMIDALA
What happened to me?
ANAKIN
I saw a man, dressd all in black. He was following you. I tried to call out to you, but ... but you were taken away from me.
Amidala goes to Anakin and touches his arm.
AMIDALA
Anakin, I can't see the future, and I'll never be a Jedi like you, but I will always care for you.
Anakin stares out at the twinkling stars.
ANAKIN
Then why don't you do something about it?
Amidala smiles sadly.
AMIDALA
I am a queen, Anakin. My first duty is to my people.
ANAKIN
What about your duty to you?
AMIDALA
I don't have a good answer for that.
A KNOCK at the door. Jar Jar Binks sticks his head in.
JAR JAR BINKS
Issa okieday. Dere-sa no one here.
Jar Jar notices the two of them talking. He comes all the way into the room.
JAR JAR BINKS
Yousa Annie, right?
Anakin nods.
JAR JAR BINKS
Mesa wundrin', whysa you bein' a bombad jedi? Yousa bombad racer.
ANAKIN
So I can free the slaves.
JAR JAR BINKS
Oh. Dissa good reasonin'. Mesa ganna go chat widda' bosses.
Jar Jar Binks exits. Amidala has to smile as Jar Jar gets his ears caught in the closing door.
JAR JAR BINKS
Oopsa.
AMIDALA
Where were we?
ANAKIN
You didn't have an answer for why you don't do what you want.
Amidala takes off her headdress. She walks to the doorway and hands it to Rabe. Amidala lets her hair fall down across her shoulders.
AMIDALA
No, I don't. Anakin... I don't even know how to say this. This is my destiny. I can't change that.
ANAKIN
How do you know? How do you know it's your destiny? You could lead thousands into battle, I've seen it, but instead you hide on this isolated planet.
AMIDALA
I'm not hiding. I'm leading my people.
ANAKIN
You're one of the leaders rebelling against the Supreme Chancellor. You have a grand destiny... much more than you have here.
Amidala smiles wearily.
AMIDALA
What you say sounds so good, Anakin. I wish I could believe it.
ANAKIN
Come with me. We can go somewhere where... where he won't find you.
AMIDALA
I need to go to sleep. We'll talk in the morning.
Anakin nods slowly. He goes to the door.
ANAKIN
I'll be just down the hall.
AMIDALA
Thanks. And Anakin...
Anakin stops halfway out the door.
AMIDALA
I'm glad you came back.
Anakin gives a small smile and closes the door.
CUT TO:
EXT CONCORD DAWN - NIGHT
The Republic fleet masses outside of the Concord Dawn system. They are outnumbered three to one by the Mandalorian fleet.
INT STAR DESTROYER - CONTINUING
ADMIRAL TUNNI, a sharp-faced humanoid, communicates with Chancellor Palpatine.
ADMIRAL TUNNI
Supreme Chancellor, we are in position to attack.
PALPATINE
Wait until I give the order. There are traitors among the Senate, and I fear they may betray us.
ADMIRAL TUNNI
Do you know who they are?
PALPATINE
I have my suspicions. Their voices must be silenced before we attack.
ADMIRAL TUNNI
Understood, Sir.
CUT TO:
EXT MANDALORIAN WARSHIP - NIGHT
Darth Sidious communicates with Mandalore.
DARTH SIDIOUS
Have the Jedi arrived?
MANDALORE
Many of the Jedi were slaughtered by the clones.
DARTH SIDIOUS
This is an unfortunate turn of events. With the Jedi reduced, there will be none to stop us.
MANDALORE
We must stop the clones, Lord Sidious.
DARTH SIDIOUS
You take care of the Jedi. I will take care of the clones. What news of the Senator from Concord Dawn?
MANDALORE
His transport was destroyed by terrorists. No survivors.
DARTH SIDIOUS
Excellent. And Malastare?
MANDALORE
He has been silenced.
DARTH SIDIOUS
Very good, Lord Mandalore.
MANDALORE
I do what I do for the glory of the Mandalorian Republic. The bloodline must be kept pure.
DARTH SIDIOUS
Bring me word when the Jedi arrive.
CUT TO:
INT JEDI TEMPLE - OBI WAN'S QUARTERS - MORNING
A KNOCK at Obi Wan's door. He rises from his meditation. The COURIER enters.
COURIER
The Jedi Council requests your presence.
Obi Wan grabs his out cloak and follows the courier.
INT JEDI TEMPLE - COUNCIL CHAMBERS - CONTINUING
Mace Windu is bruised and scarred, nevertheless, he sits in his seat at the head of the Council.
Obi Wan bows respectfully.
OBI WAN KENOBI
Masters, why have you summoned me here?
MACE WINDU
Do you know where the cloning facility is on Concord Dawn?
OBI WAN KENOBI
I only saw one.
MACE WINDU
Do you know where it is?
OBI WAN KENOBI
Yes.
MACE WINDU
Will you lead us to it?
OBI WAN KENOBI
I can tell you where it is.
MACE WINDU
That's not what I asked.
Obi Wan recognizes the determination in Mace Windu's face.
OBI WAN KENOBI
Yes, I can lead you to it.
Yoda and Mace Windu look at each other and nod.
YODA
Upon you, Obi Wan Kenobi, we confer the rank of General.
MACE WINDU
Is there anyone in the Senate that you trust?
OBI WAN KENOBI
Bail Organa, of Alderaan. But he is opposed to this war.
YODA
Go to him.
Obi Wan immediately turns and heads out the door.
MACE WINDU
May the force be with you.
OBI WAN KENOBI
Thanks.
Obi Wan exits.

EXT NABOO - NIGHT
The Mandalorian advance fleet approaches Naboo. A small patrol of Naboo fighters attempts to identify the attackers. They are shot down immediately.
